In the context of current events — the killing of George Floyd, the increased activity of and the widespread support for the Black Lives Matter movement, and public demonstrations demanding the end to systemic racism — the Putney Foodshelf recommits to its mission: to provide healthy supplemental food to area people in need. We continue to fulfill our mission regardless of a person’s race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, or transgender status), age, disability, genetic information, marital status, political affiliation, or status as a parent. Anyone needing food is welcomed and is treated with dignity and respect.
We at Putney Foodshelf realize that food insecurity is inextricably linked to inequities in housing, education, employment, equal treatment under the law, and access to health care. In addition, we understand that for over 400 years these inequities have most consistently affected people of color. As an organization, the Putney Foodshelf intends to continue our work for food justice and to educate ourselves about ways to address systemic racism.
