The mission of F4K is to empower kids to meet their own nutritional needs and to make sure that they have access to the food they need to thrive.
F4K is a program of the Putney Foodshelf, created with the belief that people have the right to access food and to be nourished, and that students are able to learn best when they have full stomachs. By providing food in a safe, empowering and respectful way, we are inviting all students to take part in addressing their nutritional needs. F4K in no way competes with or replaces the school's food service. All food obtained through F4K should be taken home and not eaten during school hours.
Our short and long-term goals for the program include:
Access to food
Nutrition education: including reading labels and ingredient lists, and understanding what constitutes a balanced meal
Cooking skills and meal planning
Encouraging kids to be food explorers
Listed below is some information about the F4K program:
F4K will provide fresh produce and a selection of shelf stable items.
The food is intended to be eaten during out-of-school times.
There is no cost to participate, and it is available to all PCS students.
We will keep track of the numbers of students that participate, but individual students will not be identified.
Some food may contain allergens, such as peanuts, nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and milk.
We will make every effort to provide food for those with dietary restrictions.
The program is scheduled to run throughout the school year and during summer camp.
Students “shop” once per week with their class at the end of the school day.
